Electron Microscope Flashcards
What are the two types of electron microscopes?
- Transmission Electron Microscopes
- Scanning Electron Microscopes.
What does the transmission electron microscope do?
The transmission electron microscope SHORTENS the wavelength in comparision to light by USING beams of ELECTRONS.
Specifically, what exactly does the TEM use?
It uses electromagnets that create an electromagnetic field to control the path of the electron beam.
What evidence does the TEM sugeest about cell theory?
- Cells contain hereditary information
- All cells have the same basic chemical composition.
- All energy flow of life occurs within cells.
What is a negative of electron microscopes?
The size, expense and maintainece limits the accessibility to researchers and universities.
What view does a scanning electron microscope provide?
A scanning electron microscope provides detailed images of surfaces.
What does a scanning electron microscope do?
The scanning electron microscope bombards solid specimens with a beam of electrons which causes secondary electrons to be emitted from the surafce layers of the specimen.
Which has a poorer resolution? Scanning or Tunneling?
The scanning electron microscope has a poorer resolution (of about 10nm) than a tunneling electron microscope.
