Electron Energy Levels Flashcards
True or false? An atom that has lost an outer electron is known as a negative ion
False
If an atom loses an electron it becomes a positive ion
What is ionising radiation?
Ionising radiation is any radiation that can knock electrons from atoms.
Do electrons further away from nucleus have a higher or lower energy than electrons close to it?
Higher
What is the relative charge of an atom if it loses two electrons?
+2
An electron absorbs EM radiation in the visible part of the spectrum. It is excited to a higher energy level, and then drops back to its original energy level, emitting EM radiation. What part of the spectrum will the EM radiation emitted be in? Explain your answer.
Visible light. The electron absorbs EM radiation in the visible part of the spectrum, and when it drops back down it will lose the same amount of energy it absorbed. This means that the energy will be released as visible light.
