Electron Configuration Flashcards
What is an energy sublevel?
Regions where electrons are likely to be found.
Why can scientists never know the exact location of an electron?
Because they are always moving.
What is the Heinsburg Uncertainty Principle?
This principle states that you can only know either the momentum or position of an electron, never BOTH
What is Schrödinger wave function?
An equation that describes the probability of finding an electron in a given region of space
Describe the shape of four different types of orbitals and how many nodes each has.
s - sphere - no nodes
p - dumbbell - 1 node
d - 4 balloons - 2 nodes
f - complicated - 3 nodes
What is the Aufbau principle?
Electrons fill the lowest energy lever first.
What is the Pauli exclusion principle?
Each orbital holds up to 2 electrons
Electrons in pairs spin in different directions
What is Hund’s rule?
Electrons fill orbitals with the same spin first THEN they pair with the opposite spin
Do electrons have more or less energy when they are further away from the nucleus?
