Electron Arrangements and ionisation energy Flashcards
define ionisation energy
Energy required to removed a mole of electrons from a mole of atoms in the gaseous state and measured in kJ mol-1
Trend of removing electrons
First electron needs the least energy to remove it as its being removed from a neutral atom.
Second one needs more energy as being removed from a 1+ ion.
And so on…
First, second and third IE of Sodium
Na(g) –> Na+(g) + e- First IE
Na+(g) –> Na2+(g) + e- Second IE
Na2+(g) –> Na3+(g) + e- Third IE
Trends in IE across a Period
Generally Increase
Nuclear charge increases making it harder to remove electron.
Trends in IE down a Period
Generally Decrease
Nuclear charge increases so actual charge felt by outer electron is less than the full nuclear charge
