EMG
electromyography - recording of the action potentials occurring in skeletal muscle fibres
extracellular recodring of emg
both electrodes outside the muscle fibres. record the emf (potential) between 2 locations both outside the cells
ECG
electrocardiogram. electrodes on limbs or chest, recording action potentials from the heart
EEG
electroencephalogram - recording action potentials from the brain. electrodes on the scalp
intracellular recording
one elctrode inside the cell - measure mef between inside (more negative) and outside cell
extracellular recording
both electrodes outside the muscle fibre - measure emf between 2 sites outside the fibres. At rest: no difference. Activating an action potential at one electrode will create a charge difference between the electrodes. It will reach the other electrode and will be equal in magnitude but opposite sign.
