electromagnets Flashcards
what is an electromagnets?
A non-permanent magnet turned on and off by controlling the current through it.
what is a solenoid?
Wire wound into a tight coil, part of an electromagnet.
what is the Core?
Soft iron metal which the solenoid is wrapped around.
What determines the strength of an electromagnet?
its strength depends on the current, the core and the number of coils in the solenoid. it increases with increasing current, greater number of turns and with an iron core.
what are two different uses of electromagnets?
circuit breakers: it breaks a circuit if too much current is drawn from the mains, and bso protects appliances.
loudspeaker
bells
what is a magnetic force?
A non-contact force from a magnet on a magnetic material
what is a permanent magnet?
an object that is magnetic all of the time.
Where on the magnet are the Magnetic poles?
They are located at the ends of a magnetic field, called north-seeking (N) and south-seeking poles (S)
fill in the blanks:
Two ‘like’ magnetic poles _____
