Electromagnets Flashcards
What is the core?
a soft iron metal which the soleniod is wrapped around
What is an electromagnet?
When a electric current flows in a wire, it creates a magnetic field around the wire
what is a magnet?
a material with a magnetic field around it in which a magnetic material experiences a force
What is a magnetic field?
a region in which there is a force on a magnet or magnetic material
What is magnetic field lines?
imaginary lines that show the direction of the force on a magnetic material
what is a permanent magnet?
an object that is magnetic all of the time
What is a solenoid?
a coil of wire that is wrapped around an electromagnet
What is the difference between and permanent magnet and a electromagnet?
- you can turn an electromagnet on and off
- you cannot turn a permanent magnet on and off
How can you increase the strength of an electromagnet?
- increase the number of turns on the coil around the core
- increase the current
- using a more magnetic material for the core
how can you find out the shape of a magnetic feild?
- using plotting compass
- using iron filings
why does increasing the current make the electromagnet stronger
there is more flow of electrons which increase the magnetic field lines around it
