Electromagnets Flashcards
What is a magnet ?
A substance that attracts magnetic materials
Where is the magnetic field the strongest ?
The ends (poles)
What happens to the magnetic field when the magnetic field is put together?
They either attract or repel
How does a compass work?
Points to magnetic North (this is where the North Pole is)
Answer the following
A)repel
B)repel
C)attract
D)attract
What is an electromagnet
A coil of wire
Becomes magnetised when electric current flows through it.
What is a compass ?
A permanent magnet which can turn freely in the earths magnetic field.
What are ‘like’ poles?
Two north magnets poles or two south poles
What are poles
The regions of permanent magnet where the force was strongest.
What are 3 ways we can make the magnetic field of a electro magnet stronger
1) increasing the electric current
2) increasing the turns of coil
3) using a iron core
What is a permanent magnet?
A magnet that stays magnetised for a long time
What is temporary magnet?
A material which loses its magnetism when the magnetising current is removed
Which is easier to magnetise? A permanent magnet or a temporary magnet?
Temporary magnets are easier to magnetise, but they lose their magnetism when the cause is removed
How to create a magnetic field?
Pass an electric current through a wire
What is the coil of wire called?
A solenoid
Is iron a temporary or permanent magnet?
Temporary
The magnetism will stop when the current is switched off
Is steel a temporary or permanent magnet?
Permanent.
It will stay magnetised even after the current is removed
What is an electromagnetic switch called?
A relay
What metals would an electromagnet attract?
iron
steel
nickel
cobalt
Which instrument measures current?
Ammeter
