electromagnetic waves Flashcards
what type of waves are electromagnetic waves
transverse waves
all electromagnetic waves have the same what?
velocity speed in air or a vacuum
how does the wavelength of an electromagnetic wave affect the way it is ….
absorbed, transmitted, reflected or refracted by different substances which affects its uses
what is refraction
when a wave passes from one medium into another
what does the direction of refraction depend on
- the angle at which the wave hits the boundary
- materials involved
for light rays, the way in which a material affects refraction is called?
it’s refractive index
when light travels:
-from a material with a low refractive index to one with a higher refractive
index, it bends towards the normal
-from a material with a high refractive index to one with a lower refractive index, it bends away from the normal
what is refraction due to
difference in wave speed in different media
when a light wave enters, at an angle, a medium in which it travels slower:
- first part of light wave slows down
- rest of wave continues at the higher speed
- causes wave to change direction, towards normal
