Electromagnetic Waves Flashcards
Definition of electromagnetic waves
They are transverse waves. That travel at the same same speed through a vacuum or air. They composed of oscillating electric and magnetic fields
List the electromagnetic spectrum from long wave length to short and from low frequency to high frequency
Radio Micro Infra red Visible light Ultra violet X-rays Gamma rays
Example of a radio wave / hazards
Television /Radio
Can cause cancer and leukaemia
Examples of micro waves /. Hazards
Cooking food , satellite communication
Can cause internal heating of body tissues
Examples of infer red / Hazards
Electrical heaters
Can cause burns
Examples of visible light / harazeds
Lasers/ fibre optic lights
Can damage the back of your eyes
Examples of ultra violet / hazards
The sun
Damage to skin cells can lead to skin cancer
Examples of x rays/. Hazards
X rays
Damage to body cells
Examples of gamma rays/ hazards
Medical imaging and treatments
They cause damage to the body cells can also cause cancer
What speed does electromagnetic waves travel at
3 x 10 to the power of 8 m/s
