Electromagnetic Spectrum Flashcards
Explain how microwaves can damage the human body.
The heat can be absorbed by our body and damage our cells.
Describe the harmful effects on the human body that can be caused by gamma rays.
It can kill our skins cells, and cause mutations in our cells which can lead to cancer.
Give two uses of microwaves.
For communications (mobile phones) and for heating up food.
Describe how and infrared camera works.
Infrared radiation is emitted and detected and creates and image on the screen. Different temperatures show up in different colours.
Give two ways gamma rays can be used in hospitals.
It can be used to treat cancer, sterilise equipment and as medical tracers.
Give two examples of infrared waves being used to transfer information.
Tv remotes and optical fibres.
Give a non medical use of x-rays.
Security scans at airports.
Give two damaging effects of ultraviolet waves.
It can damage the surface cells of the skin and surface cells of the eyes.
Which part of the atom can generate gamma rays?
The nucleus.
Describe how microwaves in a microwave oven cooks a potato.
Microwaves absorb water molecules, the water heats up. The water molecules transfer the energy to the rest of the potato through conduction.
