electromagnetic spectrum Flashcards
How did Ritter contribute to the electromagnetic spectrum discoveey?
He did the opposite to Herschel and went lower then violet and it was known that when light shines on silver chloride that it breaks down causing it to go black therefore he he knew that he had discovered something new
What was Herschel s contribution to the electromagnetic spectrum discovery?
He split up light through a prism and measured the temp between violet and red and then he put the thermometer beyond and saw something hotter and discovered infrared
What type of wave is electromagnetic radiation?
Longitudinal with electric and magnetic fields
How do speed wavelength and frequency vary through the spectrum
Speed is constant 300 million metres/ s
From radio to Gama frequency increases and wavelength decreases
What is ionising radiation?
Knocks off electrons from its target causing them to become ions, which are verry reactive.
Why is Ionising radation dangerous?
Unstable enviroment can cause DNA damage (cancer) and higher doses can kill cells.
Different types of Ionising radiation.
Alpha, Beta, Gamma
How is Gamma radiation different from Alpha and Beta Ionisation?
Alpha and Beta are particles that have a lot of kinetic enjergy whereas Gamma are a form of Electromagnetic radiation.
How are Alpha, Beta and Gamma all similar?
- Lot of energy
- Transfered to the target
This is what creates the unstable enviroment
