Electromagnetic Radiation Flashcards
Source and propagation of electromagnetic waves
Electromagnetic waves result from the acceleration of electrical charges and are characteristics by the changed electric fields that are induced perpendicular on changed magnetic fields
What is the source of electromagnetic radiation
It is the acceleration of electrical charges
What is a changed magnetic field always accompanied by
It is always accompanied by a changed electric field and a changed electric field is always accompanied by a changed magnetic field. We say they are regenerating fields (to create and re-produce)
The electromagnetic spectrum
- Radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, gamma - rays
- radio waves usage the longest waves but least frequency (F down, E down)
- gamma rays have the shortest waves but most frequency (F up, E up)
- F is directly proportional to E
Visible light
ROYGBIV
- red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet
Properties of electromagnetic waves
- moves at the same speed as light (3 x 10^8)
- can move through a vacuum
- are transverse waves wherein the electric and magnetic field are perpendicular to each other and to the direction of movement and are caused when electric charges accelerate
- transfers energy from one place to another
- all obey the wave equation, c =fh
- can also move through a medium
