Electrolytic Processes - Paper 1 Flashcards
Define electrolyte
Electrolytes are ionic compounds in the molten state or dissolved in water.
Define electrolysis
Electrolysis is a process in which electrical energy, from a direct current supply, decomposes electrolytes.
Explain the movement of ions during electrolysis.
Positively charged cations migrate to the negatively charged cathode.
Negatively charged anions migrate to the positively charged anode.
What is produced at the cathode in the electrolysis of a dissolved ionic compound?
The metal is produced at the cathode if it is less reactive than hydrogen, otherwise hydrogen is produced.
What is produced at the anode in the electrolysis of a dissolved ionic compound?
If halide ions are present, the metal halogen is produced, otherwise oxygen is produced.
Define oxidation
in terms of electrons
Oxidation is the loss of electrons.
Define reduction
in terms of electrons
Reduction is the gain of electrons.
