electrolytic and galvanic corrosion Flashcards
what is the process of electrolytic corrosion
this is when electrical current is induced into to metals from a nearby influencer such as high voltage buried cables , this causes one metal to now have more voltage which then creates a circuit and because current is the flow of electrons the electrons from one metal are drawn to another leading to one losing electrons and corroding
what is the electrolyte
whatever is between the two metals such as soil or clay, and allows electricity to flow through
what is the process of galvanic corrosion
this is when 2 dissimilar metals are in close proximity and are separated by n electrolyte or when to metals are touching, if one metal is more chemically active it will draw the electrons from the other metal causing the other to corrode, this creates a battery like system as current is flowing through both metals
what is a bimetallic strap
when two dissimilar metals with two different thermal expansion rate are both strapped together and heated and because one expands faster than the other this then causes both to bend
what is thermal expansion
when an object expands due to change in temperature
what is the measurement for pvc conduit
52 x 10 to the power of -6
what should pvc conduits include to stop it from buckling or waving
expansion couplers
what is steel and concrete did not have similar expansion rates
buildings made of concrete and reinforced with steel would crumble with one material expanding faster than the other
