Electrolysis Practical Flashcards
What is Electrolysis?
An electrical current passed through ions to split and divide them apart.
What is the name of the two electrodes
Cathode and Anode.
What must be connected to the electrodes for it to work?
A Power Supply.
Why must Electrodes be a specific material?
The material must be inert.
Why do we use inert materials?
They do not react with the solution
To prove the circuit is working what may we add on?
A lamp to see if it turns on.
What would a diagram of electrolysis include?
-Power Supply
-Wires
-Electrodes
-Beaker
-Solution
- If gas is involved an upturned Measuring Cylinder
To improve the mass gained what could be done?
-Increasing the voltage of Power Supply
-Increasing concentration of solution
-Increasing size of electrodes so more ions can go to.
What must be done before measuring mass of electrodes?
The electrodes must be cleaned to remove any excess impurities.
