electrolysis of aqueous Flashcards
what is an electrolyte
a liquid or solution that can conduct electricity
explain why lead ions move towards the cathode and not the anode
lead ions have a positive charge. This means the are attracted to the negative cathode.
what are the names of the ions present in iron chloride solution
iron ions, chloride ions, hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions.
what is discharged at the anode when iron sulfate solution is electrolysed with inert electrodes
oxygen
why is reduction with carbon better than electrolysis
because it is cheaper
why do graphite electrodes need to be replaced regularly
carbon in the electrodes reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide so they degrade over time.
what is the purpose of mixing the aluminium oxide with cryolite
to lower the melting point of the electrolyte
what happens at the anode if OH and halide ions are present
molecules of chlorine, bromine or iodine will be formed.
what happens at the cathode if H ions an metal ions are present
hydrogen gas will be produced if the metal ions form an elemental metal that is more reactive than hydrogen.
what happens when an electric current is passed through concentrated sodium chloride solutions
hydrogen gas forms at the negative electrode and a solution of sodium hydroxide also forms.
what happens to sodium chloride during electrolysis
sodium ions from the dissolved sodium chloride and hydroxide ions from the water stay behinf - they form sodium hydroxide solution.
