electrolysis Flashcards
what is electrolysis used for
Extracting metals from compounds
How do you extract Aluminium using electrolysis
You would extract the aluminium from its ore which is called Bauxite (AL2 O3) but you have to dissolve it in molten cryolite first
why do you dissolve the aluminium in the molten cryolite
It lowers the boiling point of the aluminium
what Ions are present in bauxite
Al+3 and 0+2
what does OilRig stand for
Oxidation is loss and Reduction is gain
does oxidation or reduction take place at the positive electrode?
Oxidation takes place because that’s where the ions go to loose electrons
What ions are created during the electrolysis of solutions
H+, OH-, the metal and the gas
which ions are discharged at the + electrode (cathode)
the ion that is lower down in the reactivity series will be discharged
which ions are discharged at the - electrode (anode)
If there is a halide ( group seven element) then the halide will be discharged but if there isn’t, oxygen will be discharged
why don’t compounds conduct electricity
IONS DON’T MOVE
