Electrolysis Flashcards
What is electrolysis
Process in which ionic substances are broken down into simpler substances when an electric current is passed through them.
What is an ionic substance
Form when a metal reacts with a non-metal, they contain charged particles (ions)
How do ionic substances conduct electricity when molten/dissolved in solution
Ions free to move carry electrical charge
What is the anode
positive electrode
What is the cathode
negative electrode
What happens at the anode
Negatively charged ions move to the positive electrode (anode) they lose electrons and are oxidised
What happens at the cathode
Positively charged ions move to the negative electrode, They gain electrons and are reduced
What is produced if the metal is less reactive than hydrogen
the metal is produced
What is produced if the metal is more reactive than hydrogen
hydrogen is produced
Uses for chlorine in industry
- killing bacteria in pools and drinking water
- bleach and disinfectants
- hydrochloric acid
Uses for sodium hydroxide in industry
- soap
