Electrolysis Flashcards
What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis is when you use electricity to split objects
What kind of materials are usually electrodes made of?
They are usually made of inert materials
What are the names of the electrodes?
The positive electrode is known as the anode and the negative is also known as the cathode.
Which ions go to the electrodes?
The ions which go to the electrodes are the ones that with the most charge density. It means that it has more protons or electrons in a packed area
What is Redox?
An abbreviation for loss or gain of electrons.
What is reduction?
It is when the element gains the electrons
What is oxidation?
It is when the element loses the electrons.
During an aqueous state, when does the metal get discharged instead the hydrogen ions?
The metal only gets discharged if it has a lower reactivity than hydrogen. For example:Gold or Silver
During an aqueous state when doesn’t the hydroxide ions get discharged?
Only when the other negative ion is a halide ion. E.g: Chlorine or Bromine
