Electrolysis Flashcards
1
Q
What is Electrolysis?
A
the use of an electrical current to break down compounds containing ions into their elements.
2
Q
What are electrodes made from?
A
Graphite and other conductive solids
3
Q
Where do negatively charged ions attract to?
A
anode (positive)
4
Q
Where do positively charged ions attract to?
A
cathode (negative)
5
Q
What happens when the ions get to the electrodes?
A
they gain or lose electrons to become atoms
6
Q
Why do ionic substances need to be molten or dissolved in water?
A
because that’s the only way they can conduct electricity
