Electrolysis Flashcards
What is electrolysis?
Where ionic substances are broken down into elements when an electric current is passed through them.
What is the Anode?
Positive electrode
What is the Cathode?
Negative electrode
What ion goes to the cathode?
Positive
What ion goes to the cathode?
Negative
What is a positive ion always?
A metal
What must happen to the compound for electrolysis to occur?
molten or dissolved in water
What is happening at the cathode?
Reduction (they are gaining electron)
What is a negative ion always?
A non-metal
What is happening at the anode?
Oxidation (they are loosing electrons)
A molten or dissolved ionic substance that is able to undergo electrolysis.
Electrolyte
What does cryolite do?
Lowers the melting point of aluminium oxide so less energy is needed.
What is produces at the Anode?
.If there is a halide ion, halogen is formed
.If there is no halide ion, oxygen is formed
What is produced at the Cathode?
The least reactive on the reactivity series forms (metal or hydrogen)
What is the acronym for the reactivity series?
