ELECTROLYSIS Flashcards
key words
Anode
The positive electrode in an electrolytic cell, toward which negatively charged particles are attracted.
Cathode
The negative electrode in an electrolytic cell, toward which positively charged particles are attracted.
Electrodes
An electrode is a solid electric conductor that carries electric current into non-metallic solids, or liquids, or gases.
Cation
A positively charged ion that is formed when a metallic element loses one or more electrons
Anion
An ion with negative charge, meaning it has more electrons than protons
Electrolyte
A substance that dissociates in water into charged particles called ions.
Ore
Naturally occurring rocks that contain metals or metal compounds in sufficient amounts to make it worthwhile extracting them
Extraction
The process of selectively removing a compound of interest from a mixture using a solvent
Cryolite
a mineral consisting of a fluoride of sodium and aluminum found especially in Greenland usually in white cleavable masses and formerly used as a source of aluminum.
Bauxite
a mixture of minerals which contain, as well as impurities, different concentrations of hydrated aluminium oxides
Oxidation
a process that occurs when atoms or groups of atoms lose electrons.
Reduction
the transfer of electrons between species in a chemical reaction, where there is a process of gaining electrons or a decrease in the oxidation state by an element
