Electrolysis Flashcards
What are electrolytes?
Ionic compounds that are:
* in the molten state
* dissolved in water
What are ions able to do in the molten or dissolved state?
The ions are free to move within the liquid or solution
What is the name of the negative charged electrode?
Cathode
What is the name of the positive charged electrode?
Anode
Where are the positive ions attracted to in electrolysis?
The negatively charged cathode
Where are the negative ions attracted to in electrolysis?
The positively charged Anode
At the cathode, What is produced if the metal is less reactive than hydrogen?
The metal
At the cathode, What is produced if the metal is more reactive than hydrogen?
Hydrogen
If a halide in the solution is not present during electrolysis what is produced at the anode?
Oxygen is produced
If a halide in the solution is present during electrolysis what is produced at the anode?
The halide is produced
What does a half equation at the cathode look like?
Na+ + e- —> Na
What is the equation for the formation of oxygen at the Anode?
4OH- –> 2H20 + 02 + 4e-
What is the equation for the formation of a halide at the anode?
2Cl- –> Cl2 + 2e-
Where does reduction happen?
Cathode
Where does oxidation happen?
Anode
