Electrolyis Flashcards
What is the name for the negative electrode and what charges does it attract?
Cathode- this attracts positive ions
What is the name for the positive electrode and which charges does it attract?
Anode- attracts negative ions
What is the name for the liquid solution which contains an ionic compound?
Electrolyte
What forms at the anode?
Oxygen or the negative ion
What forms at the cathode?
Hydrogen gas or the positive metal ion
What are the rules for formation at the anode?
If there is a halide ion (group 7), halogen is formed
Is there is no halide ion oxygen is formed (from OH-)
What are the rules for formation at the cathode?
The least reactive on the reactivity series forms (metal or hydrogen)
Where does reduction happen? (RED CAT)
Cathode
Where does oxidation happen?
Anode
What is the definition of electrolysis?
Electrolysis is where ionic substances are broken down into elements when an electric current is passed through them
What is the function of Cyrolite?
Is lowers the melting point of Aluminium oxide so less energy is needed
Why isn’t electrolysis used for metals less reactive than carbon?
It is cheaper and more convenient to use carbon if possible
How do you test for chlorine?
Damp litmus paper bleaches In the presence of chlorine gas
How do you test for hydrogen gas?
Lit splint produces a squeaky pop
What are some safety measures for the electrolysis required practical?
Safety goggles should be worn throughout the practical.
Voltage limited to 4V.
Do not leave cell on for more than 5 minutes
