Electrode Potentials Flashcards
What is an electrochemical cell
A cell that converts chemical energy into electrical energy through redox reactions
How do you make an electrochemical cell
Put 2 half cells containing an electrode and an ionic solution together with a salt bridge and an external circuit
How are salt bridges usually formed
Filter paper soaked in a neutral electrolyte
Which electrode does oxidation occur at
Anode
Which electrode does reduction occur at
Cathode
Which direction do electrons move in a cell
From anode to cathode
How do you work out cell potential
E of the cell = E of RHS - E of LHS
Is the LHS more positive or negative
Always the more negative side unless using the standard Hydrogen electrode
What is the standard Hydrogen electrode
Half cell made up of a platinum electrode. 1.00 moldm-3 H2+ solution at 298K and 100kPa. It’s electrode potential is always 0.
How to tell if a reaction is feasible using electrode potentials
Work out Electrode potential of the cell. If it’s positive it’s possible at standard conditions.
What equation occurs at the anode of a lithium battery
CoO2 + Li+ +e- = LiCoO2
What equation occurs at the cathode of a lithium battery
Li+ +e- = Li
What equation happens at the anode of a Hydrogen fule cell
2H2 + 4OH- = 4H2O + 4e-
What equation happens at the cathode of a Hydrogen fule cell
O2 + 2H2O + 4e- = 4OH-
