Electrode potential Flashcards
Half cell
One half of an electrochemical cell
Can be constructed of a metal dipped in its ion or a platinum electrode with 2 aqueous ions
Electrochemical cell
Created by joining 2 different half cells together by wire, voltmeter
and a salt bridge
One side is reducing and the other side is oxidising
What happens if there’s 2 metal ions instead of a metal and an ion?
Use a platinum electrode
Standard conditions
298k
1moldm-3 of ion
100 kpa
Standard hydrogen electrode
Used as a reference to measure standard electron potential
How to get 1 moldm-3 of H+ ions
Use 1 moldm-3 of HCl or 0.5 moldm-3 of H2SO4
Electrode potential
Write equations in reduced form
One cell reduced and the other oxidised
Work out which is being reduced and which is being oxidised
NO PRoblem
Negative oxidised
Positive reduced
Salt bridge
Filter paper turned into a strip and saturated in KNO3
Allows ions to flow through
