Electrochemistry Flashcards
What is an electrochemical cell?
An electrochemical cell is a contained system in which oxidation-reduction reactions occur.
What are the three types of electrochemical cells?
- Galvanic Cells ( also called Voltaic cells)
- Concentrations Cells
- Electrolytic Cells
What type of electrochemical cell contains spontaneous reactions and what type contains non?
Galvanic and concentration cells contain spontaneous reactions while electrolytic cells contain nonspontaneous reactions.
What is the relationship between spontaniety and EMF value within electrochemical cells?
If the electrochemical cell has a positive EMF, the cell contains spontaneous reactions (galvanic and concentration cells). If the electrochemical cell has a negative EMF, the cell contains nonspontaneous reactions (electrolytic cells).
