Electrochemistry Flashcards
Which electrode is the negative electrode (in relation to electron flow)?
Electrons flow from the negative electrode or ‘anode’.
Is the cathode the negative or positive electrode?
Positive
Oxidation occurs at which electrode?
Anode
What happens to the reduction potential when you reverse a half reaction
The value stays the same but the sign is reversed.
How does the amount of moles affect the E⁰ of a cell?
It has no effect.
What does a positive standard reduction potential mean?
The higher the value the more likely the substance is to be reduced andbe a stronger oxidizing agent.
An oxidizing agent can oxidase any reducing agent that lies below it on a standard reduction table. Which side is each agent.
LHS RHS
Oxisising agent Reducing agent
ΔG = -nFξ What are they and what units?
ΔG is change in free energy (Joules)
n is number of moles ( mol)
F is Faradays constant (coloumbs mol⁻¹)
ξ is cell voltage (V)
Numonic for electronegative atome
