Electrochemistry Flashcards
Redox reaction
A reaction involving the transfer of electrons, always accompanied by changes in oxidation number
Oxidation
The loss of electrons
Reduction
The gain of electrons
Oxidizing agent (oxidant)
The substance that accepts electrons ( it gets reduced)
Reducing agent (reductant)
The substance that donates electrons (gets oxidized)
Anode
The electrode at which oxidation takes place (in an electrochemical cell). (Anode Oxidation or AN OX)
Cathode
The electrode at which reduction takes place (in an electrochemical cell)
(Cathode Reduction or RED CAT)
Electrolyte
A solution that can conduct electricity due to the presence of fee ions
Half-cell
A metal (other elements may also be use) electrode in a solution of its ions
Galvanic (voltaic) cell
A device, consisting of two half-cells, that converts chemical potential energy into electrical potential energy
Electrolytic cell
A device, consisting of two half-cells, that converts electrical potential energy into chemical potential energy
