electrochemistry Flashcards
what does a simple battery consist of?
two different metals connected by an electrolyte
why is an electrolyte needed in any cell or battery?
to complete the circuit
why do batteries eventually stop producing electricity?
the chemicals in the battery have been used up
what chemical change takes place when a battery is used to produce energy?
chemical energy –> electrical energy
why can lemons be used to conduct electricity?
lemon juice is acidid therefore its an electrolyte
the further apart the metals are
the stronger the current will be
metals good at donating electrons are found?
at the top of the electrochemical series
metals better at accepting electrons are found?
at the bottom of the electrochemical series
what is a displacement reaction?
occurs when a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from a compound containing the less reactive element
what does ‘displaces’ mean?
pushes out
electrons flow from?
the higher metal to the lower metal
