Electro-Magnetic Spectrum Flashcards
What is a source of radio waves
A source is the sun, a radio,satalites,tv
What are the effects of radio waves on the body?
None, they pass through the body without being absorbed.
What is one main use for radio waves?
Broadcasting TV uses radiowaves to transmit to a tv
What is a source of microwaves?
A mobile phone,TV, satellite and cooking tools.
What are the effects of microwaves on the body?
Can be absorbed by the body causing heating of cells and burns.
What is a main use for microwaves?
A microwave oven which can be used in order to heat food up.
Whats a source of infrared radiation?
The sun, a light or a fire. Heat sources.
Whats an effect of infrared on the body?
Can cause skin burns to the skin,
What is one main use for infrared?
Using a oven stove in order to cook a piece of food.
What are some sources for visible light?
The sun, Bulb Heat Reactions Lighting
What are the effects of visible light on body?
You can get blindness from the light and can cause heat in hig concentration.
Whats one main use for visible light?
A main use would be to see things as colours are absorbed by the object and whats reflected back to the retina is all other colours not absorbed.
What are sources of UV?
Any UV light/lamp.
The sun
What are effects of Uv on the body?
Can cause skin burns and burns to cells
Whats a main use for UV?
Seeing something which may not be seen.
Whats an source of xrays?
An xray machine.
The sun
What are uses of xrays?
See an object which reflects the xray.
Bone density using a xray machine.
What are the effects of xrays?
Seeing objects through a material.
Whats a source of gamma rays?
Nuclear reactions
The sun
What are the effects of the body for gamma rays?
Skin burns, kills any cells completely.
Radiation burns
Whats one main use for gamma rays?
One main use for gamma rays is sterilising medical equipment from germs / bacteria cleaning them. Preventing spread of illness.
How do xrays work?
Xrays are produced when electrons strike metal target and are liberated from the heated filament, the xrays are produced when the electrons collide with atoms and nuclei of the target.
How xrays images are made?
X-ray imaging utilises the ability of high frequency electromagnetic waves to pass through soft parts of the human body largely unimpeded.
X-rays advantage and disadvantage.
Advantages of x-rays:
X-rays are used to treat malign tumors before its spreads throughout the human body.
They help radiologists identify cracks, infections, injury, and abnormal bones.
They also help in identifying bone cancer.
X-rays help in locating alien objects inside the bones or around them.
Disadvantages of x-rays:
x-rays makes our blood cells to have higher level of hydrogen peroxide which could cause cell damage.
a higher risk of getting cancer from X-rays.
The X-rays are able to change the base of the DNA causing a mutation.
