ECT is
the induction of a lot or seizure by passing controlled electric current through the brain via metal electrodes across the temples
electrodes can be placed to the head bilaterally or unilaterally
is an effective treatment of patients who cannot respond to medication or other treatment modalities
treatment - 6-12 or 15 treatments in total can be given depending on the result
ECT contraindications
heart disease - myocardial infarction
respiratory conditions - pulmonary embolism
brain disease - cerebral tumours
Pre care
patient should fast for 6 hours from midnight before ECT and avoid giving mood stabilisers or anti-anxiety drugs a night before ECT
Post care
commence post op observations, every 5 minutes for 20 minutes
- patient may move to recovery room when more than on patient and when approved by the anaesthetist
- maintain clear airway and continue with observations until patient gains consciousness
- when patient recovers, take patient to the ward and continue with post op observations
observe patient after gaining consciousness, as patient may need assistance if confused, unsteady and disorientated
- encourage patient to remain in bed until fully alert and conscious
-when patient recovers, offer sips of water, then drinks
- if tolerating drinks give food to patient and medication
- continue to offer support and reassurance as needed
ECT side effects
headache
lack of concentration
temporary confusion
memory loss
