Electricty Vocab Flashcards
Voltage
Potential difference across a component - amount of energy each charge has
Volts (V) - Voltmeter - connect in parallel with component
In series voltage at each component adds to total voltage over supply
Current
Flow of charge (electrons) (A - Amps)
-Ammeter measures this - connect in series
Same at every point in series circuit
Level at source is greater than branches in parallel (current at source= sum of currents in separate branches)
Resistance (Ω)
=V/I
The opposition of a circuit component to the flow of current
Semiconductors
Strong covalent bonding, not many electrons which are free to move + conduct the current
-electrons break free from atoms so can move/conduct current - resistance decreases
Eg. Thermistor, LDR (light dependent resistor)
