Electricty Test 3 Flashcards
What is an electric circuit
An electric circuit is a path in which electrons from a voltage or current source flow.
Open/closed circuit
A broken wire or an “open” (off) switch both leave gaps in a circuit preventing electrons from traveling from one side of the power source to the other. Thus, electrons will not flow. This situation is called an open circuit. A closed (on) switch means that the circuit through the switch is connected.
Series circuit
A series circuit is a circuit in which resistors are arranged in a chain, so the current has only one path to take.
Parallel circuit
When the resistors take multiple paths and not just one
What is a voltmeter
an instrument for measuring electric potential in volts.
What is an ammeter
an instrument for measuring electric current in amperes.
What is voltage, current, and resistance
Voltage- energy able to move charges through a circuit
Current-An electric current is a flow of electric charge.
Resistance-Resistance is the opposition to the flow of electric current
What is ohms law
Current in a wire is equal to voltage divided by resistance
What is a fuse and a circuit breaker
Fuse-a safety device that melts and breaks an electric circuit if the current gets too high
Circuit breaker- opens circuit if too much current is flowing
WHAT ARE conductors and insulators
In a conductor, electric current can flow freely, in an insulator it cannot
How to calculate voltage, resistance, and current
Voltage- current X resistance
Current- voltage divided by resistance
Resistance- voltage divided by current
Name three parts of an electric circuit
Source,load,current
What is the outcome of a short circuit
Fire
What is a short circuit
What happens if too much current flows through one wire
