electricty and magnetism Flashcards
what is static electricty
imblance of electrical charges that bulid up on the surface of an object
what is current electricty
the flow of free electrons on an electrical conductor
what is an insulator
materials where electrons are held tight and cant move. electric current cannot flow
what is a conductor
materials where electrons can flow freely in an electric current
what is current in a circut
the flow of electricity in an electronic circuit, and to the amount of electricity flowing through a circuit.
what is voltage in a circut
the pressure from an electrical circuit’s power source that pushes charged electrons through a conducting loop
what is an electric circut
the path for electic charge to flow through
what is electron flow
charge carried by electrons from negative to positive
what is the difference between voltage in parallel then in series
volatge is the same in parallel but shared in series
what is power
how much energy is transfered from one form to another in one second
what is the cost of electricty
energy transfered by an aplliance measured in kilowatts per hour
what are some magnetic materials
- iron
- colbalt
- nickel
what poles attrack and what poles repel
like poles repel
e.g. north and north repel
south and south repel
non like terms attrack
e.g. north and south attrack
how do you test a magnets strenght
by making a chain of paper clips. the more the stronger the magnet
how to demagnetise a magnet
- hit it with a hammer
- heat it at a high temp
- drop it frequently
how to make a magnet
- rub it
- put a magnetic material in a mold and put a electromagnet next to it
