Electricty Flashcards
What is energy
Energy is the ability to do work
Difference between kinetic and potential energy
●is energy in motion or movement(kinetic)
●is energy at rest or stored energy(potential)
Name the 4 different types of energy
●potential. ●heat
●kinetic ●light
Define static
Means stationary or not moving
Define electricity
Electricity is the flow of charge
Define static electricity
Is the build up of charge on the surface of an object
What is friction
Friction is a force that opposes motion
What causes friction
It occurs when 2 objects or materials rub against friction occurs
This friction causes electrons to transfer from atoms of one materail to the other
Difference between open circuit and closed circuit
●an open circuit is one which does not allow electricity to pass through (a gap is created when switch is of)
●a closed circuit is one which allows electricity to pass through
Define cell, fuse, buzzer, resistor, variable resistor, conductor
●cell-source of electricity
●conductor-a wire that allows electricity to pass through
●resistor- a device which changes electrical energy to other forms of useful energy
●variable resistor-is one whose resistant change is controlled by a daily
●buzzer-is a type of resistor that produces sound
●fuse-is a protective device which prevents electrical fires and above heated appliances
What is electrical current
Flow of electricity charges in a circuit
List component of a cicuit
Cell. Conductor
Switch. Resistor
Define ameterand volt meter
An instrument that measures the current in a circuit the unit it measures are ampires(ameter)
Is a instrument that measures voltage across any 2 points in a circuit
Name the 3 effects of current electricity
Heating effect
Magnetic effect
Chemical effect
What are fuses made up of
Thin wire with low heating point and placed in a glass tubing
Define short circuit
Occurs when current flows following a path with the least resistant
How does fusion work
The fuse melts creating a gap when this happens the device stops working preventing a fire
2 types of circuits
[Series circuit] is one where the components are arranged next to each other
[Parallel circuit] is one where the components are arranged one below the other and has more than one pathway
Characteristics of a series circuit
●it has only one pathway[disadvantages]
●it is uniform[advantage]
●if one component of the circuit stops working the whole circuit will stop working
Characteristics of parallel circuit
●the components are arranged one below the other(disadvantages)
●the current flowing in each pathway is unique(advantages)
Define visible light
This is light that can be preceieved by our eyes also known as white l8ght
Define spectrum of visible light
This refers to the full range of colors which make up the visible white light
Define the following
Refraction
Dispersion
Refraction is the bending of light when it changes media
Dispersion is splitting of lighting the seven colours of the ranibow
Difference between ,nonluminous luminous and illuminous
Luminous refers to object that can give of their own light
Nonluminous opposite of luminous
Illuminous is provision of light from a source
