Electricity Unit Vocab Flashcards
Vocab Flashcards
Static Electricity
The accumulation of excess electric charge on an object.
Law of Conservation of Change
Charge can be transferred from object to object but it cannot be created or destroyed.
Conductor
A material in which electrons are able to move easily.
Insulator
A material in which electrons are not able to move easily.
Charging by Contact
The process of transferring charge by touching or rubbing.
Charging by Induction
The rearrangement of electrons on a neutral object caused by a nearby charged object.
Electric Current
The net movement of electric charges in a single direction.
Voltage Difference
Related to the force that causes electric charges to flow.
Circuit
A closed path that electric current follows.
Resistance
The tendency for a material to oppose the flow of electrons.
Ohms Law
The current in a circuit equals the voltage dIfference divided by resistance.
Series Circuit
The current has only one link to flow through.
Parallel Circuit
Electric current has more than one path to flow.
Electric Power
Rate at which electrical energy is converted to another form of energy - in Watts (W).
Wet-Cell Battery
A device that produces electricity to provide power for electronic devices, cars, etc.) that contains liquid.
Dry-Cell Battery
One source of constant electric current.
Fuse
To join or blend to form a single entity.
Circuit Breaker
An automatic device for stopping the flow of current in an electric circuit as a safety measure.
Watts
The SI unit of power.
Amperes
The SI base unit of electrical current.
