Electricity In The Home Flashcards
What do most cables have?
They are connected to the mains supply by three-core cables. Meaning they have three wires inside, each with a core of copper and a coloured plastic coating.
Name the 9 possible hazards?
- Long cables.
- Frayed cables.
- Cables in contact with heat or water.
- Water near sockets.
- Shoving things into sockets.
- Damaged plugs.
- Too many plugs in one socket.
- Lighting sockets without bulbs in.
- Appliances without their covers on.
Name the three wires in a cable.
Live Wire.
Earth Wire.
Neutral Wire.
What are the colours of each of the wires?
Live Wire- Brown.
Earth Wire- Green and Yellow.
Neutral Wire- Blue.
What does the live wire (brown) supply?
It supplies alternates between positive and negative voltage.
What does the earth wire (green and yellow) supply?
It’s for protecting the wiring. Safety. Works with the fuse to prevent fire and shocks. It attached to the metal casing of the appliance and caries the electricity to the earth (AWAY FROM YOU) if anything goes wrong and the live or neutral wires touch the casing.
What does the neutral wire (blue) supply?
The neutral wire is always OV. electricity flows in and out through the live and neutral wires only.
What makes and plug wired correctly?
- The right coloured wires are connected to the correct pin and firmly screwed in.
- There’s no bare wire showing.
- The cable grip is tightly fastened over the cable OUTER LAYER.
- Different appliances need different amounts of electrical energy. Thicker cables have LESS RESISTANCE so they carry MORE CURRENT.
What are the features of a plug?
- The metal parts are made of copper or brass be cays they conduct electricity very well.
- Case, cable grip and cable insulation are made of rubber or plastic.
