Electricity Exam Style Q's Flashcards
1
Q
1 . 1 Explain the function of step-up and step-down transformers in the National Grid.
A
Step-up transformers increase the voltage at which electrical power is transmitted and step-down transformers decrease the voltage at which
electrical power is transmitted [1]. They are required for the efficient transmission of electrical power across the National Grid [1].
2
Q
In other words, if they were operating at full capacity, they could produce around three times the amount of electricity.
Suggest two reasons why the National Grid might be run in this way.
E.C.
A
to allow for EXTRA CAPACITY when power stations are offline (‘in case power stations break down’) [1]; to reduce the amount of (polluting) fossil fuels burnt [1] etc.
