electricity chapter Flashcards
What is static electricity
The build up of charge in insulating materials, it can cause a spark when dishcharged
Why are most materials neutral in charge
Most materials contain a charge and have positive protons but negative electrons and these cancel each other out
What happens when materials are rubbed together (in conducting materials too)
The friction between the two materials causes electrons to be rubbed off one of them and onto the other one.
For conducting materials the electrons just flow straight back again to the other material so no charge is built up.
What does the way in which the electrons get transferred depend on
The specific materials involved
During static electricity what heats transferred
Only negative electrons.
