16
Q

What would you do if someone is being electrocuted?

A

Don’t touch them as you will get an electric shock. Use an object that does not conduct electricity - wood, rubber or plastic object.

17
Q

Three tips when using electrical appliances:

A
  1. Make sure it is unplugged if filling with water (kettle, iron).
  2. Do not use if you can see the wires.
  3. Do not use in the bathroom eg heater near the bath, hairdryer near the sink.
18
Q

Why do we have insulators?

A

To protect us from the dangers of electricity.
They stop the electricity from going to other parts of the system where it may cause a fire or other damage or injure a person.

19
Q

What do electricians do?

A

They know about electricity and hot to work with it safely.

20
Q

What are fossil fuels?

A

The remains of dead plants and animals that store energy from the sun from millions of years ago.

21
Q

Give some examples of fossil fuels:

A

Coal, Oil and natural gas.

22
Q

Where does the energy in fossil fuels come from?

A

The Sun.

23
Q

How are fossil fuels formed:

A

Pressure from above and heat from the earth over millions of years.

24
Q

How was coal formed. 4 Comments:

A
  1. Huge ferns and forest grew and they absorbed the energy from the sun millions of years ago.
  2. Plants died and formed into layers of rotting material. Overtime pressure from above packed layers together to form Peat.
  3. Dead sea animals made lignate.
  4. Sand and mud piled on top, more pressure occured and heat inside the earth turned liginate and peat into coal.
25
Q

What is a non renewable resource?

A

Something that cannot be replaced when used up. eg Coal.

26
Q

What is a renewable resource?

A

Something that can be replaced when used eg water, trees.

27
Q

How is most of our electricity made in South Africa?

A

By coal burning Power Stations.

28
Q

Look at Power Station Pic… describe each stage:

A

Look at pic.
