Electricity Flashcards
Energy
Energy is the ability to cause change - can change the temperature, shape, speed, or direction of an object.
Ohm’s Law
A law in electricity
Voltage = current x resistance
V= IR
Joule
A measure of the capacity to do work or generate heat.
Parallel circuit
A parallel circuit is a circuit that has more than one path for the electric current to flow.
Voltage
The pressure from an electrical circuit’s power source.
Electrodes
A good conductor of electricity that usually connects nonmetallic parts of a circuit.
Series Circuit
A circuit with only one path for electricity to flow
Energy Transformation
Energy is transferred from one power source to another.
Electricity
A form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles.
Transformers
A device that transforms electricity from one current to another
Alternating current
The value of the quantity and direction of the current in voltage is not constant, it changes at a regular interval.
Semiconductors
Semi conducts electricity, not an insulator or a conductor.
Resistance
The measure of how difficult it is for electrons to flow through a material.
Catalyst
A substance that changes (slows down or speeds up) the rate of a chemical reaction.
Kinetic Energy
The energy being released
Electric Current
Steady flow of electrons through a conductor
Ions
An atom or molecule with a net electric charge
Direct current
The rate of current that flows consistently in one direction
Current
Rate of flow of negative charges in an electric circuit.
Battery
A device that stores chemical energy and converts electric energy
Law of Conservation of Energy
No energy can be created or destroyed, only changed in form
Potential Energy
A kind of energy that comes from position or condition
The higher an object is the more potential energy it has.
Conductors
Conducts electricity or heat
Watts
A unit of power measuring electric flow
Circuit
A closed path through which an electric current passes.
Insulators
A material in which electrons cannot move easily from place to place is called an insulator. Ex: Plastic, wood, glass, and rubber.
Power
The rate at which energy is transferred by an electric circuit
