Electricity Flashcards
Energy
Makes things happen when its transferred in a circuit
Charge
A property of some particles that stores energy in an electrostatic store which can then be transferred
Current
The flow/ movement of charge
PD ( voltage )
How much energy each unit of charge transfers
Voltmeter
Measures PD
Variable resistor
Adjusts current
Resistance
How difficult it is to generate a current
Factors that affect resistance
Material- different materials have different structures - different resistances
Length of wire - longer the wire, more collisions between electrons & ions ; it has higher resistance
Thickness of wire - a thicker wire has less collisions between electrons & ions ; it has lower resistance
Temperature - a hotter wire means that ions have more energy, vibrate faster with greater amplitude. More collisions between ions & electrons , higher resistance
How would you describe a graph that has a straight line through the origin?
Directly proportional
Why do metals conduct electricity so well?
Because the delocalised electrons carry charge
What happens when delocalised electrons collide with ions?
They lose resistance
