electricity Flashcards
what is charge
a fundamental property that objects can have. it causes object to experience a force when in an electromagnetic field. either positive or negative has symbol (q) and measured in coulombs (C)
when two materials are rubbing against each other , what is it charging by
charging by friction
if there is a charged object brought near a neutral object, what charging is it
charging by induction
when two materials are rubbed together which material will electrons transfer to
the material with the most affinity for electrons
describe function of van de graff generator
all of the positive charges on the dome wan to repel each other but cannot move. they have an electric field around them which attracts electrons. if the voltage is big enough spark can occur. in air you typically need 10000V per cm spark
describe uses and dangers of static electricity
photocopier function, spray painting a car, removing pollutants in power stations dangers is lightning producing and causing gases to ignite in the atmosphere
what is conventional current
when current is flowing is moving negative charges basically flow of electrons
formula for calculating current
I= Q/t
(I) is current measured in ampere (A)
(Q) is charge
(T) is time
identify where to place an ammeter
placed in series in circuit
what is current
the rate at which a charge passes a point in a circuit
what is voltage
energe per unit charge
formula for calculating voltage
V= E/Q
V= voltage measured in volts and E is energy measured in joules and Q is charge measured in C
what is voltmeter
instrument used for measuring potential difference between two points in the circuits. it is a measure of how much energy is being used by each coloumb of charge flowing between two points and is placed in parallel with components to measure its voltage
what is resistance and what causes it
is the oppisition to the flow of current in a circuit and measured in ohms. it is caused by vibrating atoms getting in the way this causes collisions between atoms and electrons which induces hear and resists flow of charge
what does ohms law state
ohms law states that current in and voltage across a conductor are proportional
