electricity Flashcards
what is a series circuit and what is the current flow like in it
all the components are connected end to end, they are in one loop.
The current flow is constant (SI)
what is a parallel circuit + 2 advantages of it
circuit with branches where current can flow through more then one route
advantages are -
- components in the same circuit can be switched on and off individually
- if a component in one branch stops working, the other branches are not effected
is current constant in a parallel circuit
no because the current divides at the intercepts of the wires and the current that is required for a component to work goes into the branch, but voltage is constant (PVC)
what is the rule for parallel circuits
the current through the cell is equal to the total of the current in all the branches
what are amperes (amps)
measured in?
A
what are amperes denoted to
I
what does rating tell us
tells us the maximum voltage that an be used
what is voltage and what is it measured in
a quantity that is related to either the energy supplied by a power supply or the energy changed by a component, measured in volts
what is used to measure voltage and what is it
voltmeter - a meter that is connected in parallel with a component in order to measure the voltage across a component
what is used to measure amperes
ammeter - a meter that in connected in series with a component in order to measure the amps through a component
which way does the flow of electrons go + flow of current
from negative to positive because positive attracts negative and opposite for current
in a cell which side is positive
longer side
what is a resistor
equation for voltage
v = I times R
equation for resistance
R = v/I
