Electricity Flashcards
the 3 Parts of the law of electrostatic charges
Like charges repel
opposite charges attract
charged objects are attracted to neutral objects
What are the parts of the atom, their charges and where are they located?
PROTONS: positive - in nucelus
ELECTRONS:Negative-orbiting in the space around the nucleus
NEUTRONS:neutral -in Nucelus
determine the type of charge on:
a) 4 positive charge and 3 negative charge
b) 7 positive charge and 9 negative charge
a) positive (more positives rhan negatives)
b) negative (more negatives)
how an object is charged by friction
2 objects rubbed together, one loses electrons and one gained them. the one that loses is positive, and the one that gains is negative because electrons are negative!!
using the chart, determine the charge each material will gain when the two are rubbed together
a) Gas + silk -
b) ebonite - fur +
c) hair + balloon -
d) amber - cotton +
does static electricity mean the charges never move?
The electrons move from one object to another but not through wires.
neutral objects are attracted to charged objects. why?
when rhe neutral object is close to the charged object, it does a opposite charge on the neutral object, then the opposite charges attract
object a repels from B and attracts C, C is repelled by ebonite charged with fury. whats the charge on each object?
A repels from B (same charges)
A attracts c (opposite charges)
C repelled by ebonite (both negative because ebonite is negatively charged!)
therefore, A and b are positive, C is negative
what causes lightning?
when theres a charge seperation in the clouds, too much positive = electrons jumping
too much negative = electrons jump out
Why do pie plates fly off the top of a charges Van de graff generator?
Ball of van is postively charged , plates become positive too making then repel and fly.
why shoudl you ground yourself by touching metal vefore pumping gas?
gasoline funes are flammable if you are charged and create a spark, you could ignite the fumes
