Electricity Flashcards
How do power stations work
Generating lots of electricity and converting thermal energy into electrical energy
How to create a lot of heat
Low current
High voltage because of resistance
Use of step up transformer
Increase voltage
= minimise energy loss during transmission
Use of step down transformers
Decrease voltage
= high voltage is dangerous and it would blow up house hold appliances
Define static electricity
Build up of charge on insulating materials
Describe static electricity on insulating materials eg a cloth
Electrons can’t flow
= positive static charge
Describe what happens when size of charge increases
- potential difference increases
If potential difference is large enough electrons can jump across the gap to earth= a spark
Use of copper
Conduct electricity
Describe the live wire
Brown
Provides alternating potential difference of 230V
Describe the neutral wire
Blue
Complete the circuit by carrying away current
Describe the earth wire
Striped green and yellow
Doesn’t normally carry a current
Stops appliance casing from becoming live (would get electric shock otherwise)
Why do earths and neutral wire pass electricity
Both have 0 voltage
