Electricity Flashcards
What is potential difference measured in?
Volts (V)
What is current measured in and what is its symbol?
Amps (unit: A, symbol: I)
What is charge measured in and what is its symbol?
Coulombs (unit: C, symbol: Q)
What is the current law for a series circuit?
All components share the same current
What is the current law for a parallel circuit?
current is different along each path (the total current is equal to all of the paths’ currents added together)
How do you calculate current?
I=V/R
Which component reduces current in a circuit?
Resistor
Why do electrons flow around a circuit?
The battery provides a source of potential difference; the negative terminal pushes electrons as they repel and pull towards the positive terminal as they attract
What is the difference between a cell and a battery?
A battery is a group of cells, which are single-unit devices that convert chemical energy into electric energy
How does static electricity work?
All objects have charge, because they all have protons and electrons, but usually they are balanced and therefore the object is neutral. However, when friction occurs with another object, electrons will be transferred that will attract the object with the other
