Electricity Flashcards
What is a Battery?
A chemical supply of electrical energy
What is a circuit?
A closed loop that electricity moves through, starting at a power source and having at least 1 other component.
Would a circuit containing only a battery and a wire work?
No, it would short circuit the battery and probably cause it to explode or something equally as dangerous.
What is the difference between a cell and a battery?
A battery is a combination of 2 or more cells, and a cell is a store of internal energy that can be transferred as an electrical current.
The biggest difference is that batteries are chemical, and cells are not.
What is a conductor?
A material or substance that allows electricity to pass through it easily
What materials conduct electricity really well?
Metals
What is electric current?
The movement of electrically charged particles in a circuit
What is an electron?
A subatomic particle with a negative charge.
What is electric charge?
The electrical state of an object or particle, can be positively charged or negatively charged.
What is a parallel circuit?
A circuit where the current divides into 2 or more paths and reconnects to complete the circuit. Some components may receive less electric current than others.
What is a series circuit?
A circuit where each component receives the same amount of electricity in turn. The opposite of a parallel circuit.
What is an insulator?
A material that does not (in electricity terms) allow electricity to pass through it easily.
Wood is an example of what?
An insulator
What is an ammeter?
A device used to measure electric current.
What is the unit ammeters measure in?
Amps, or Amperes
